A fabulous talk regarding the various aspects of two famous mountains ie, Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain of Africa and the Himalaya, the highest mountain of the world, especially, Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalaya, was organized by NOVA on 25th August, 2024.
Dr. Santanu Saha, Head, Department of Botani, PG Section, Bidhannagar Govt. College, Kolkata and Dr. Samir Kumar Samanta, Head, Department of Geography, Kanyashree College, Kolkata were the two eminent speakers.
Dr. Saha explained the tribal life of Kilimanjaro National Park and as well as Tanjania, its beautiful and charming flora and fauna. He focused on the adaption of tribal people with their surrounding environment. He lucidly described with the help of Power Point Presentation(PPT) how the furious wild beasts and man are living together since time immemorial sharing their habitat with in an ecosystem.
Dr. Samanta’s talk was around Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalaya. He explained the various aspects of Geomorphology and hazards including the lifestyle of local people. In addition to this, participants got a glimpse of rich biosphere of Himalaya from his marvelous description.
The members of NOVA participated in the India March for Science Programme on 13th August,2024. In this programme professors, students of various colleges and universities across the West Bengal, eminent scientists and science loving people marched in a rally which started from College Square, Kolkata and ended in Dharmatala.
The main objective of the said march was to protest against the anti-science attitude of the government which is reflected through its various activities, like unscientific syllabus at school, college and university level, curtailment of budget on education and research etc. As for example, NCERT, a Central Government Organization for school education excluded the famous Darwin's theory and periodic table of Mendeleev from school syllabus. Likewise, budget of research on science and technology is reduced up to 0.8% of the total budget. Education budget is only 2.59% in the year 2024-25.

The place is behind Kalighat tramdipar. Nova president sir lives there and he organized it. Program 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Nova's second program with snakes this year was held on Saturday, August 27. The program was organized by the Department of Geography, Kalinagar Mahavidyalaya, Uor 24 Parganas. The topic was "Living with Snakes: Pleasure or Pain". Chandan Suravi Das spoke through an audio visual slide show on behalf of Nova. About 100 audience with students and teachers.The appearance of snakes in the world, different types of snakes, snakes of India and West Bengal, ways to recognize poisonous and non-poisonous snakes, characteristics of three well-known poisonous snakes of Sundarbans, treatment of snake bite patients etc. were the topics of discussion. Students and teachers all participated in the question and answer session after the slide show. All together the program is about two and a half hours.
India March for Science, as an integral part of the global March for Science, is an earnest endeavour to celebrate science, to emphasize the importance of cultivating scientific temper, and to resist the attempts to propagate unscientific superstitious beliefs.
